Lee Surname Y-DNA Projects: The Good The Bad and The Ugly

Book  8 - Lees of Virginia Lost Lineages a Series by Jacqueli Finley

Lee Surname Y-DNA Projects: The Good The Bad and The Ugly

Jacqueli Finley

Jacqueli Finley's book, Lee Surname Y-DNA Projects: The Good The Bad and The Ugly, is a comprehensive examination of the Lee Y-DNA Projects, particularly the Lee Y-DNA Project claims. Finley argues that these projects have wrongfully excluded many legitimate descendants of the Lees of Virginia due to their reliance on Y-DNA paternal-line testing, which only traces one direct male lineage. This limited approach has led to false lineage determinations and the disconnection of authentic family branches, erasing rightful descendants from the historical record. Finley highlights that historical realities, such as adoptions, non-paternal events, and incomplete documentation, make Y-DNA alone an unreliable tool for comprehensive genealogical verification. To address these injustices, she developed an autosomal linear triangulation method, which uses autosomal DNA combined with historical records and oral family histories to identify shared genetic segments across multiple related individuals. This method has successfully confirmed genetic relationships to the Lees of Virginia that Y-DNA testing had failed to detect, restoring rightful connections to many descendants who had been wrongly excluded. Finley's work aims to create a more inclusive and evidence-based framework for lineage confirmation, calling out poor genealogical curation and flawed Y-DNA interpretations while setting a higher standard for accuracy, fairness, and historical truth in family research.
